2.5 HP with Big Bore Engineered Pump
The MAC2400 is powered by a 2.5 HP motor. The Makita Big Bore engineered pump with cast iron cylinder has greater bore and stroke for increased compression, faster recovery and less noise. The cast iron construction is engineered for increased durability even under tough job-site conditions. The MAC2400 has an oil-lubricated pump and is equipped with a large automotive style filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency. The Big Bore oil-lubricated pump is also more efficient: the MAC2400 runs cooler and at half the RPM of most competitive units, resulting in greater motor and pump life and lower noise. The 4.2 gallon twin-stacked tank sustains an operating pressure of 130 PSI, and delivers 40PSI (4.8 CFM) and 90 PSI (4.2 CFM), enough for two nailers. The low AMP draw reduces instances of tripped breakers and voltage drop that can cause premature motor failure. The roll bar handle provides portability and additional protection, helping it withstand harsh jobsite environments. Comment: This is a fantastic value at $300. Extremely solid unit and very quiet. Its heavy, yes, but I find it to be still quite portable. Did I say it was quiet? Recovery time is also excellent. I would match this against any other 4 gallon tank for the money.

Comment: I did a lot of reading reviews before buying it and was amazed at the consistant comments about damage "during shipping". Mine arrived dented on the front between the gages, however it was nothing that caused any malfunction, so I realy don't care much, EXCEPT...I honestly believe the company shipped me a compressor that had prior damage. There was NO damage to the shipping box what so ever, so it had to be placed in the box that way. I think somebody knew they were doing it, and that's proabably how they can sell them cheaper than other companies.
About the compressor: it runs quiet, no leaks, gages and regulator are good, heavily built. Great for inflating tires, using nuematic tools etc., but NOT good for using a blowing tip (even a small one) to clean off mower decks, blow out engine air filters, etc, because there is not enough volume in those small tanks and the pressure drops quickly and I have to wait for it to build up again.
About the compressor: it runs quiet, no leaks, gages and regulator are good, heavily built. Comment: I purchased this compressor over three years ago through Amazon and have been completely satisfied with it.
First, understand that this is not a toy. Solid steel construction, a protective cage and durable components bulk this up into the heavy weight class. That said, the unit is exceptionally quiet and very durable. From the time I purchased it, I have done nothing but add the oil, turn it off and on, and drain the tank.
Several design features make this a pleasing product: 1) The compressor is effectively protected by the tanks and the solid roll cage. I haven't dropped this thing, but I'm confident it would survive. 2) Frequently used features are mounted conveniently on the front panel. The pressure gauges, two universal hose fittings and presure regulator dial are right there in front of you. The on/off lever is located conveniently off to the side where it is protected. The pressure relief valve is located at the bottom of the lower tank and features a convenient lever control. Finally, when you do have to heft this thing around, the integrated, centrally located handle offers a relatively balanced grip.
I've used this with nail guns, staplers, air guns and paint sprayers. The only adjustment I've ever had to make is with the pressure regulator. My larger upright compressor sits abandoned in the corner. For home shop applications I would advise purchasers to build an Air Compressor Caddy such as the one featured in ShopNotes #60. (I've uploaded a photo of my blinged out version to the photo section) It makes life much easier.

Summary: Guess what? It was damaged in shipping! 2010-06-11
Comment: Before accepting the compressor from UPS I took a close look at the carton. Aside from a few scrapes it looked in good shape. I opened the carton and the compressor looked beautiful! When I took it out and removed the plastic cover I did see that the cooling fins were a little mashed on the side, but that looked like something that probably would happen eventually, so I wasn't concerned. I put in the oil, installed the air filter, plugged it in and reached around to open the drain valve before turning it on for the initial break-in run. It was then that I saw that the lower tank was dented on the left end. It probably wouldn't affect the performance but I'm pretty fussy about such things and it was something I wouldn't accept in an expensive brand new tool. Bummer! Amazon wouldn't let me ship it back, but I was satisfied with the adjustment they made for the damage, so I'm glad I bought it from Amazon.com, though next time I'll buy a compressor locally, even if it costs a bit more, and I'll give it a close inspection before I leave the store.

The roll cage protects the compressor from the top, front and bottom, and the tanks appear less likely to be damaged from the back, but the 2 sides of the compressor are very vulnerable. If dropped on the right side, the switch or right ends of the tanks can get damaged, if dropped on the left side, the air tube/cooling fins, the crankcase or left ends of the tanks can get damaged. Keep the box upright and I doubt if there would have been any damage.
I don't blame UPS, I blame Makita. Either put some warnings on the carton or put a lot of padding on the sides!

Makita MAC2400 Big Bore 2.5 HP Air Compressor
Many others here have given great kudos to this fine machine and I am one of them. It is very quiet and powerful. It will not paint your car or run an air sander, but it will run most any other nail gun or other tool you have (rated at 4cfm or less). What I like about this tool is that it gives you two connections on the front panel, so I can run two tools at once.
It is heavy! Has a handle for one handed carry and if you are the incredible hulk, you might pull that off. Some say it weighs 80 lbs, but it feels like more, it is a beast! Course, I wouldn't trade the weight for a lighter, poorer made compressor, the weight is just what you have to deal with if you want this nice machine.
Amazon is a great retailer, but read the fine print. This compressor has oil in it and because of that, it is NOT RETURNABLE! I had a problem and needed to return mine and hit a brick wall. Finally, after working my way up the food chain at amazon, a very amiable resolution was made. But buyer beware, the fine print says that this compressor is not returnable and they are not kidding. You can pay more at a local store and get local service or take your chances at amazon. I love amazon, but this is not their core market and if you need service, you are going to deal with Makita (not altogether bad).
I have a craftsman compressor that has much more horsepower, bigger tank and a higher cfm, but it only serves as a noise maker and can not keep up with the Makita. The craftsman will be in my next garage sale.
